Little Jenny's Journey through the Phases of Learning to Read and Spell

Once you have mastered reading and spelling, it is easy to forget what it is like to be a student who is struggling. Creator Jennifer Militzer-Kopperl shares her childhood experiences to introduce the five phases of learning to read and spell and to show teachers how vitally important it is to provide direct instruction in literacy capacities. The video is broken down into 5 chapters, one for each phase.

In the first two videos, Jennifer talks about phonemic awareness and compares and contrasts learning to read before and after having direct instruction in phonemic awareness.

In the third and fourth videos, Jennifer shares that she did not receive direct instruction in symbol imagery--and she shares the devastating consequences.

The fifth video completes the story and illustrates the final phase of learning to read and spell.
