Some Ways to Teach Phonemic Awareness
Overview of Video
There are six types of phonemic awareness. The following video provides an overview of the six types and some ways to teach phonemic awareness. The six types are as follows:
- Phoneme Matching: Recognizing rhymes and alliteration
- Onset & Rime: a way to split a single-syllable word into two parts
- Blending Phonemes: Taking separate speech sounds and combining them into a word
- Sequencing Phonemes: Identifying the position of a sound in a word (i.e., beginning, middle, or end)
- Segmenting Phonemes: Breaking a word into its separate speech sounds
- Manipulating Phonemes: Changing words by adding, subtracting, substituting, or transposing speech sounds
